When a child goes missing, it feels like the whole world stops. People come together, hoping and praying for a miracle—that the child will be found and brought back home safely to their worried family. Every time we hear stories like these, we wish for a happy ending, a family reunion, or at least something good to come out of a terrible situation.
But sometimes, these cases don’t end that way. They stay unsolved for years, leaving families and communities with unanswered questions. Think about the case of Madeleine McCann—years have passed, and still, no one knows what really happened to her. Her family holds on to hope that one day she’ll be found.
Then, there are stories that have tragic endings. The kind where the child is found, but not alive. Sadly, this is one of those heartbreaking stories. This is the story of Kennedy Jean Schroer.
Kennedy Jean Schroer’s remains were found in the most horrifying place—in the backyard of her adoptive parents’ home. The police believe she had been dead for four years. It’s the kind of case that shakes people to their core, because it’s not just about a missing child; it’s about a little girl who was supposed to be safe in a new home, with a new family.
Kennedy and her two sisters were adopted in 2019. Their biological mother had lost custody of them, and like any mother, she had hoped her daughters would be safe and have a better life with their adoptive family in Kansas, USA. But things didn’t turn out that way.
On September 11, 2024, the unimaginable happened—police discovered Kennedy’s body buried in the garden of her adoptive family’s house. DNA tests confirmed the remains were Kennedy’s. The police believe she died in November 2020, when she was just six years old.
But because her body was so decomposed after being buried for years, it’s impossible to tell exactly how she died. This leaves the police with more questions than answers, but they’re investigating. As of now, no one has been arrested.
The police understand that people are upset and want justice fast, but they’re being cautious. “While we understand the desire to hold people accountable, we need to get this right, not just fast,” said an officer working on the case. They want to make sure every piece of evidence is carefully examined so that they can find out exactly what happened to little Kennedy.
Kennedy’s biological mother, Christa Helm, is completely devastated. Before Kennedy was adopted, she was named Natalie Garcia, and Christa wants nothing more than to bring her two other daughters, who are still living with the adoptive family, back home. “I want them to get the therapy and love they need from their real family, where they belong,” Christa told KSN.
People are frustrated that no one has been arrested yet, and the Rose Hill Police Department understands that frustration. “We understand that many in the public may be confused as to why no one has been arrested in this case,” the police said in a press release.
They added, “What we would like to convey is that we have one chance to gather as much information as possible, to find out what happened to this child and to tell her story.”
The police aren’t working alone. They’ve brought in detectives, law enforcement from nearby areas, social workers, mental health professionals, and more. They are all focused on one thing—getting justice for Kennedy. “Officers, detectives, surrounding law enforcement agencies, social workers, mental health professionals, and many others” are working together to uncover the truth, the police said.
They ended their statement with a promise that anyone following the case would appreciate: “What we can assure anyone interested in this case, Kennedy is the center of our Universe and will remain so until we have answers.”
This story is one of those that breaks your heart. Kennedy was just a little girl, and now, the world wants to know what happened to her and why she never got the chance to grow up.
